Imagine a healthcare system where the patient is treated, not just the disease—a system where Eastern healing techniques support Western medicine in a holistic approach to patient care.

In 2009, the Urban Zen Foundation launched the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program (UZIT) toward realizing this vision. The UZIT program includes training in therapeutically oriented yoga, administration of essential oils, Reiki, nutrition and contemplative care.

Inspired by Donna Karan and designed by Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee, UZIT trains members of the healthcare and yoga communities to provide its cluster of holistic support services to people facing illness, injury or stress, in and out of a hospital setting, including people in senior care facilities, hospice care and nursing schools, as well as serving staff at secondary schools and corporations.

Its curriculum is uniquely designed to address the classic complaints associated with illness: Exhaustion, Pain, Anxiety, Nausea, Insomnia and Constipation (PANIC™).

Thousands of students have completed the program, which includes at least 50 hours of clinical rotation in a hospital or healthcare setting or in private or out-patient settings.

Visit the Urban Zen website for more information on this inspiring work.

~This program is designed for yoga teacher, Reiki practitioner, doctor, nurse or other allied medical professional, essential oil therapist.

Though students are in class for only 13 days, students will have up to 12 months to complete all the program requirements.

Note, There are 4 on site sessions in this training.

In between those sessions, there are lessons administered via an online learning management software. So content is released and studied for the entire 13 week duration of the training.

Also note, while Rodney and Colleen kick off the training on 9/26, they then hand the training over to their senior team, whom are mostly being imported from Ohio. This team is lead by Marcia Miller.

About this Presenter:

Rodney Yee was born in 1957, the Chinese-American son of an Air Force Colonel, and spent his childhood on military bases in Altus, Oklahoma and Puerto Rico. He was a gymnast during his high school years and later became a ballet dancer, performing with the Oakland Ballet Company and the Matsuyama Ballet Company of Tokyo, Japan. He began studies in philosophy and physical therapy at the University of California, Berkeley, though he dropped out in order to pursue ballet full-time.

Yee became a yoga enthusiast in the Iyengar school, but now teaches a blend of Iyengar Yoga and his own invented style. He began his Yoga teaching career at a studio called The Yoga Room in Berkeley; later, he co-founded the Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland.

Yee now teaches around the world at workshops, retreats, and conferences.

Rodney married former model Colleen Saidman in December 2006. Colleen Saidman Yee came to yoga in 1987 and later graduated from Jivamukti’s teacher-training program in 1998. She’s worked with Mother Theresa at the Home for the Dying, opened two Yoga Shanti studios in New York, and taught alongside her husband. She helped create Urban Zen’s Integrative Yoga Therapist program and several DVDs.

Rodney and Coleen live in The Hamptons.

Marcia Miller, E-RYT 500, has been teaching yoga for over 40 years and has taught all levels and types of students from new beginners to yoga teachers and everyone in between. In 2001 Marcia was one of the founders/owners of Yoga on High. She is one of a few Master Teacher Trainers for the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT) Trainings and in charge of Reiki training for UZIT. She is on a community advisory board for the Center for Integrative Health and Wellness at the Ohio State University and offers UZIT modalities in Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University.

Along with her business partners she also co-directs the 200- and the 300-hour Teacher Training Program. She designed and taught the yoga protocols for two large Ohio State University research projects, one researching the effect of yoga on the immune system and the other on the benefits of yoga for women recovering from breast cancer.

Marcia is also a Reiki Master Teacher and teaches Reiki around the country as well as at Yoga on High. She uses reiki extensively in her classes and with private clients. She is also passionate about Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and is bringing NVC to the yoga community and yoga to the NVC community. In 2008 Marcia took the lead in founding the Yoga on High Foundation, a fund at the Columbus Foundation as a way to serve all populations of people in her community including low income kids, homeless veterans and populations traumatized by sexual violence.

Marcia recently had the privilege and joy to teach UZIT to hospice workers in S. Africa and continues to offer skill building in self-care to people in hard jobs who want to continue their lives of service. Her yoga training has been continuous as she has broadened her knowledge in areas of asana and meditation, anatomy and physiology, yoga for traumatized populations and therapeutic yoga.
