Manju
Jois is dedicated to his mission of training teachers and
practitioners in the ancient style of yoga, which combines
the asanas, pranayamas and meditation chants for a total mind-body-spirit
unification with self and God.
Manju Jois, Astanga Yoga Guru
of Mysore, South India, is the oldest of three sons born to
the world renown Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. At the age of 7, Manju
was awakened early each day by his father to begin lessons
that would forever change his life and the lives of those
who would study with him in the years to come. He began teaching
at the age of 15 with his father and has taught continuously
for the last 42 years. After high school Manju began traveling
all over Northern and Southern India to give Yoga demonstrations
and teach Astanga Yoga to his fellow Indians. He traveled
from Madras in Southern New Dehli, Benares, and Bombay and
other parts of Northern India. Manju decided not to become
a professor of Yoga at Benares Hindu University because he
was moved to continue his travels and teach the Astanga Tradition.
During that time he also went
to Pondicherry, demonstrating and teaching Yoga at the Geeta
Ananda Ashram. There were two American Yoga students, David
Williams and Norman Allen, that witnessed Manju’s demonstrations.
Williams, extremely impressed by Manju's demonstration and
knowledge, approached Manju and asked him for his Guru. Manju
sent Williams to his father, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
The two westerners stayed in India,
studying with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois for several months. After
returning to Encinitas, California, Williams invited Sri K.
Pattabhi and Manju Jois to the USA in 1975. This was the first
time Astanga Yoga was brought to the U.S.A.
