Event Description:

Friday Evening: Hip on Hips: An All-Levels Asana Practice
An enjoyable and manageable practice with practical insights into overcoming tight hamstrings and hips, preventing and overcoming injury, and generally bringing about an inner revolution and new inspiration in your practice! Standing poses will never feel the same, hips will open, and backs will bend!

The session will be a well-rounded practice of all classes of poses (no inversions) appropriate to all levels of practitioners who have some foundational experience in hatha yoga.

Saturday morning: Hatha Yoga, Illuminated
The tradition of hatha yoga began with sages who were spiritual masters as well as healers, who revolutionized the practice of yoga with a clear and integrated vision of practice that touches body, breath, mind and heart, and which invoked the illuminative and transformational power of grace.

This morning's practice will be a rousing practice of asana threaded with insights on mudra, bandha and breath set forth in the original texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. This will lead us into deeper insights into the spiritual power of the breath — the uplifting power of ‘Udana’ invoked in asana and pranayama.

The morning session will be mainly asana practice, culminating in some breathing practices and meditation. The afternoon will continue with this thread into deeper pranayama and meditation practice.

Saturday afternoon: Tantra Engages Life
Tantric philosophy offers an approach to pranayama, meditation and spiritual progress that closely complements contemporary life, and draws upon our emotional life to deepen our experience of the inner Self. It provides practical tools to give you a handle on your approach to life through practice.

In this session we’ll focus on such approaches to meditation and pranayama. We’ll base them upon practices drawn from hatha yoga texts that will deepen and inspire your practice — it will include enlightening explanation, instruction and guidance to carry you forward in your own personal practice.

Sunday morning: The Core — The Passageway of Light
Hatha Yoga has from its inception been concerned with the unfolding of consciousness through the central thread of Prana, the "Sushumna." More recent and more heavily asana-based hatha yoga has been concerned with strengthening the "core" to bring greater health and stability to our physical being, and liberating expression to our emotional being. The two approaches to hatha yoga are actually closely related.

In this asana practice, which will explore backbending and inversions as well as some arm balancing, we will discover this ‘core’ on all levels through straightforward and memorable cues for practice that will take you there, in body, breath and mind.
