Today’s schools are filled with never before seen challenges. High violence rates, low success rates and an increased population of mentally and physically unhealthy children are rampant. Yoga is accessible, easy and the benefits come quickly. The more you grow your practice, the more benefits you will see.
I'm fairly confident that fellowship has been the driving force around much of what I've done in the world. My dear and sweet friend just loves it when I say fellowship. You can see her eyes light up when I suggest we get together for a little fellowship.
When I googled the definition of fellowship the first thing that popped up was “a friendly association, especially with people who share one's interests”. The free dictionary on line says “The condition of sharing similar interests, ideals, or experiences, as by reason of profession, religion, or nationality".
We were all born yogis, we just forgot who we are.
I will save you the mumbo jumbo about New Years Resolutions.
On New Years Day, I looked in the mirror, 1 newborn baby, 2 bloody-marys and 3 football bowl games deep into the day...and thought:
“My wife is the one breastfeeding but my manboobs might just do the trick!”
“These moose-knuckle-high-waisted-dad-jeans are not going to further my image.”
“Dave! Yoga Journal is on the phone. They want you for their new cover,” said no one...ever!
Yeah, I got a little down on myself. It happens!
They say that there are a few events in Life that are top stressors.
In the last 12 months I've faced most of them!
But ~ I've never been more content.
Tired right now, yes! But content.
Intentions have guided this eventful year.
Family wise in the past 12 months,
I got married (Eloped with our 4 children in tow)
Said goodbye to Birdie, my sweet 14 year old four-legged fur baby
Sold a car/Bought a car
Moved our “stuff” into storage, moved the family to Venice Beach, CA for the Summer
We’ve all been there. Sitting on our mats in an open room surrounded by yogis with jars of green goodness, lotus tattoos, and exuding inner peace. They stinkin’ glow with the “inner light” we’ve been trying to harness for years by juicing, sweating, and pushing ourselves harder. It’s discouraging, it’s shaming, but if met with a dose of self-compassion and awareness, it’s a beautiful part of our process.

I'm holding a grudge. That's bad for a yoga teacher, right? But I can't seem to help myself as I walk through a class of women (and a lone, older gentleman) moving and sweating in time with the fast beat and thrumming base playing during their nightly Zumba class. Each of their faces look bright and happy, but concentrated and present as they follow the movements of the teacher.
Lao Tzu said, “A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” I would have called BS on the above quote until the day I lost control of my life wheel, while heading towards the life I thought I was meant to live. I had a plan, a good one, a solid one, and a fun one. I guess I got too cocky or maybe just a bit too comfortable because the direction I was heading took a major detour, then another, then another, until I was completely lost.
